A Saturday night out ended in tragedy for a young man who died
following a road traffic collision at Kilmoon Cross.
The deceased and three other men who were all non-Irish nationals were
traveling in a car, which collided with a lorry at Kilmoon Cross on
the N2 at Ashbourne at around 9.15pm on Saturday (12th January).
The car, believed to be traveling from the Ashbourne direction, was
turning onto the Duleek/Drogheda road at the junction when the
collision occurred.
Emergency services and gardai were called to the scene.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene while a second male occupant
of the car was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda but
was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital.
At the time of going to press the injured man’s condition was
described by the Garda Press Office as “critical.”
Two other male occupants of the car were taken to Our Lady Of Lourdes
Hospital in Drogheda with non-serious injuries.
At 11am on Sunday, the N2 at Kilmoon Cross remained closed while
gardai carried out a technical examination of the scene.
Diversions were in place for motorists traveling in both directions on
the N2. The car involved in the collision remained at the scene along
with the truck, which it collided with and the deceased’s body
remained at the scene, covered over, while the investigations into the
collision continued.
Only last month local Councillor James Managan (FF) urged Meath County
Council for public lighting to be erected at Kilmoon Cross because of
the number of fatal crashes at the cross.
“Kilmoon is used by many people as a bus stop. People get off buses in
the pitch black of night and there’s no protection for them,” Cllr
Mangan said last month.
He raised the issue of public lighting for the Cross at a recent Meath
County Council Budget Meeting. He said he is waiting to hear back on
the Council’s decision.
